Radiation therapy is one of the three pillars of cancer treatment, alongside surgery and systemic therapy. At Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (GCCC), the Department of Radiation Oncology has assembled a team that combines international training, academic research and day-to-day clinical precision.

The department covers the complete range of modern radiotherapy: three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT/SRS), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), Gamma Knife radiosurgery and proton therapy. Treatment sites include head and neck tumours, central nervous system tumours, thoracic tumours, gastrointestinal and gynaecological tumours, urological tumours and paediatric tumours.

He is a certified medical physicist of the American College of Radiology, a standing committee member of the AAPM Particle Therapy Committee, and co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Radiology and Oncology. He is a standing committee member of the Tumour Particle Therapy and Technology Committee of the China Association for Medical Devices Industry and a distinguished talent of Huangpu District, Guangzhou Development District. He has been engaged in radiation applications, clinical practice and research for more than 20 years and has previously served as chief physicist of the Atlanta Medical Group in the United States, associate professor at Oklahoma State University, physics director of the ProCure Proton Therapy Center, and research director of the Breast Centre at the University of North Carolina. He specialises in proton therapy, intensity-modulated and stereotactic radiotherapy, and adaptive therapy, including the development, application and quality control of new technologies. He has published more than 200 books, articles and abstracts in China and abroad.

He is a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and chief proton physicist of Concord Medical Group. He has worked in radiation physics for more than 30 years, including over 15 years in proton radiotherapy physics. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, and formerly a professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida and physics director of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. He currently serves as co-chair of the Image Guidance Committee of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) and as a member of the Ion Radiotherapy Committee of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and has participated in formulating multiple radiotherapy standards for the association. He has served as principal physics investigator for several clinical radiotherapy trials in the United States.

He is a committee member of the Precision Radiotherapy Technology Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and a committee member of the Radiosurgery Expert Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Neurosurgists. He is one of the physicians in China who began working in the field of radiosurgery at an early stage. Over the years he has treated nearly 10,000 patients with craniocerebral diseases from China and abroad. He specialises in Gamma Knife staged treatment of large intracranial tumours and in the treatment of conditions such as trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

He is the chief scientist of a National Key Research and Development Programme project on proton and heavy ion therapy and the chief expert of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission's Proton Characteristic Technology project for 2023 to 2025. He is deputy chairman of the Ion Radiotherapy Branch of the China Association of Medical Equipment. He worked and studied for many years at MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas, the oncology centre of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, and Fox Chase Cancer Center in the United States. He has been engaged in tumour radiotherapy, especially the clinical application of proton and heavy ion therapy, and in comprehensive tumour treatment for more than 30 years. Since 2007 he has helped advance the Shanghai proton and heavy ion project, and has served as director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital and deputy director of the Radiotherapy Centre at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, assisting the NMPA in formulating multiple clinical management standards and technical guidance principles related to proton and heavy ion therapy.

In 1999 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States. He was among the first to propose four types of clinical biological behaviour for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and to use them to guide clinical treatment; he carried out adjuvant radiotherapy with different radiation doses for stage I and II diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; and he proposed improvements to the biological target volume for post-operative radiotherapy of glioma, raising the local control rate for grade I and grade II glioma and improving the quality of life of patients with grade III and grade IV glioma.

He obtained his medical doctorate from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in 1999. From 2000 to 2003 he received postdoctoral training at MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas and at the Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) in Michigan, United States. He was an expert for the Ministry of Health's Healthy China 2020 strategic planning research in 2008, and was named among the world's top 100,000 scientists in 2022. He is an associate editor of Cancer Communications and currently serves as vice chairman of the CSCO Vascular Targeted Therapy Expert Committee and chairman of the Tumour Microenvironment Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.

Multidisciplinary Planning Behind Every Treatment

Radiotherapy plans at GCCC are not produced in isolation. Radiation oncologists, medical physicists and dosimetrists work together to design and verify each plan, and complex cases are reviewed by the hospital's multidisciplinary (MDT) tumour board, which brings together radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiology and pathology.

For international patients, the hospital's international medical services team assists with medical record review, remote consultation, visa invitation letters, airport transfers and interpretation, so that treatment can begin promptly after arrival in Guangzhou.
